With their inquisitive personalities and twitching noses, bunnies are the third-most popular companion animal in the United States. In a horrific trend, the factory farming industry is increasingly pushing to slaughter rabbits for profit.
Rabbits are highly social animals, whose natural behavior includes running, jumping, hiding and playing. When they’re happy, they leap into the air and twist around—in an adorable, joyful movement called a “binky.”
That makes the image even more heartbreaking: rows and rows of bunnies crammed
Industry-backed legislation threatens to legalize cruel rabbit farms in states across the US. Multiple state legislatures have proposed dangerous bills that would legalize the factory farming of rabbits—allowing companies in Connecticut, for example, to raise and slaughter up to 1,000 rabbits per operation.
To make matters worse, rabbits raised for fur or food are especially vulnerable in the eyes of the law. Common safeguards, like the Animal Welfare Act or the Humane Methods of Slaughter Act, don’t apply to them.
Not only do these farms present massive welfare concerns for rabbits; they represent the commoditization and abuse of yet another species, all for the sake of corporate profit. The industry’s push to legalize the factory farming of rabbits must be stopped.
Thankfully, supporters like you have already rallied to stop some of these dangerous bills in their tracks. With our partner organizations, The Humane League is poised to tackle new bills that threaten rabbits. But we can’t do it without you.
